As any major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
