We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about how we choose to love one another.
An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when the couple move from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
The couple confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
